Description
SBN051 & SBN052 models are simply a replica of the original SBN050 but made with a different coloured thread, thorax and epoxy.
The SBN050 was one of the original handful of steel backs. It has been my “go to” nymph for still water sight fishing to cruising brown trout, sometimes in less than 40cm of water. Despite it’s small size (7mm in length) it’s surprisingly heavy so care needs to be taken when presenting the fly, especially in flat calm conditions.
The SBN050 is ideal for getting your fly on the bottom but you need to cast well in advance of the trout’s arrival. If it sees the “plop” of the nymph, it will become suspicious and likely refuse it, or worse still, disappear at a great rate of knots! If there is a chop on the lake then you can attack the trout directly as the rippled surface will help hide the impact of your presentation.
Given the variety of insects, I’m now making this model in different colours whilst still retaining the basic principal of the slim body. The SBN 051 and 052 are born!

The SBN050 pictured in the article accounted for 5 nice brown trout near Twizel recently. This very same nymph has already seen plenty of action!
BODY: tan tying thread/stainless wire rib.
THORAX: ultra thin rubber legs/synthetic dubbing.
STEELBACK: tan epoxy over matte stainless steel.
